Snowmen and snowflakes -- the generic "winter" theme. Ah. Heaven forbid there should be any acknowledgement of the C-word.

I'm writing this from my living room. On our mantel, there is porcelain manger scene -- Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, shepherds, wise men, herald angel -- surrounded by real evergreen boughs. Eight stockings (me, my wife, six kids) hang from the mantle. The stairway railings are wreathed with imitation evergreen garlands, miniature white lights and red ribbons.

Like I said, if you're not going to be traditional at Christmas, when are you ever going to be traditional?

I suspect the red and white in the stores might really be Cherry Blast! or Super Duper Strawberry.

Speaking of traditional, have you noticed how hard it is to find wrapping paper with Santa on it? Now it's snowmen and snowflakes. Do they sell this stuff in FL and AZ, too?

Sorry, I'm strictly a peppermint traditionalist. Mrs. McCain and I went Christmas shopping at Wal-Mart last week. I saw all those crazy brand-name weirdo things and said, "Nuh-uh." Got 72 of the old-fashioned red-and-white peppermint kind with which to adorn the tree for Christmas morning.

Oh, yeah: The tree? A REAL 8-footer, thank you very much.

And the lights on the tree? Multi-colored and flashy. I know that the single-color "tasteful" lights are fashionable, but the McCain household has done the old-fashioned multicolored lights for two decades, and we're not changing merely for the sake of fashion.

If you're not going to be traditional at Christmas, when are you ever going to be traditional? So ditch those silly Gobstoppers things and get yourself some real red-and-white peppermint canes. Western civilization may hang in the balance.
