Blogger Chain Mail

Via Jennsylvania:

So here it goes…

1.  Link back to the person who tagged you. [I wasn’t actually tagged though :( ]

2.  Post these rules on your blog. [Check]

3.  Share six unimportant things about yourself.

  1. I watch The Simpsons or Family Guy every single day.
  2. I’m afraid of frogs, crickets, grasshoppers, pretty much anything that can jump. (Actually, this is rather important.)
  3. I don’t like most breakfast foods (pancakes, waffles, eggs, English muffins, French toast, sausage, syrup, etc.)
  4. It doesn’t matter what else is on, what time of day it is or how far along it is in the movie, I will ALWAYS watch The Godfather 1 and 2 if it’s on television.  If there were a Godfather channel, all other channels would be obsolete in my house.  Unless they include part 3, in which case I’d give myself a 3 hour break to sleep.
  5. I sing to my dog and replace words in the song with his name.
  6. I have over 4,500 Coke points!  That’s a lot.

4.  Tag six random people at the end of your entry.

“Modernizing” the Republican Party

Written by Lotus on Saturday, 29 of March , 2008 at 5:55 pm

Yesterday evening Karl Rove spoke at George Washington University in Washington D.C.  Rove gave a very rah-rah, pro-McCain speech.  Afterwards, a student went down the list of issues in which McCain differs with a majority of his fellow Republicans –  immigration, campaign finance reform, Bush tax cuts, etc.  The student asked if it was a problem to have a nominee that differs from the Republican Party’s platform.  Rove’s answer: Then it’s time to “modernize” the party.  He then gave the example of Dems ”modernizing” their party when Clinton said “the end of big government is over.”

Modernize=Abandon principles central to the movement?

Modernize=Adopt positions held by the Left?

Modernize=Become indistinguishable from the other party?

Many have made an issu e of the Democrat’s “cult of personality” primary.  However, it seems that Rove is ready to embrace the same game plan.  Unfortunately, conservatives may be on the losing end on this one.  Their presumed nominee is someone with a positive message (if you don’t look at the receipt) that has managed to send the Clinton machine into a tailspin.  Our nominee is a maverick, meaning one that refuses adherence to a group of associates.  Senator McCain is our nominee and ”modernizing the Party” means our principles are malleable to his beliefs.

I’m sure there’s someone out there that knows Rove’s win-lose ratio.   In November we’ll add a notch to one of those columns.

Coulter: 9/11 Strategy a Success!

Written by Lotus on Monday, 24 of March , 2008 at 8:02 pm

LOTUS used to travel with Miss Coulter on many occasions, most often for speeches on college campuses.  At every speech there was at least one student (or “professor”) that began his question with “Did you really mean it when you said…”  Most of those questions were centered on the infamous quote from herpost-9/11 column.  You know the one — “invade their countries, kill their leaders, convert them to Christianity.”  Coulter’s answer: “Now more than ever!”

Today Coulter notes that having already invaded their countries and killed their leaders, her three-point plan is now a success.  Fox News reports:

VATICAN CITY —  Italy’s most prominent Muslim commentator, a journalist with iconoclastic views such as support for Israel, converted to Roman Catholicism Saturday when the pope baptized him at an Easter service.

As a choir sang, Pope Benedict XVI poured holy water over Magdi Allam’s head and said a brief prayer in Latin.

“We no longer stand alongside or in opposition to one another,” Benedict said in a homily reflecting on the meaning of baptism. “Thus faith is a force for peace and reconciliation in the world: distances between people are overcome, in the Lord we have become close.”

Vatican television zoomed in on Allam, who sat in the front row of the basilica along with six other candidates for baptism.

An Egyptian-born, non-practicing Muslim who is married to a Catholic, Allam often writes on Muslim and Arab affairs and has infuriated some Muslims with his criticism of extremism and support for the Jewish state.

The deputy editor of the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Allam, 55, told the Il Giornale newspaper in a December interview that his criticism of Palestinian suicide bombing generated threats on his life in 2003, prompting the Italian government to provide him with a sizable security detail.

Recipe of the Week: Tortilla Soup

Written by Lotus on Saturday, 22 of March , 2008 at 9:39 am

This weeks’s recipe is Trevor’s Tortilla Soup.  I like this one because it’s a smooth, creamy soup rather than the typical broth-based soup.  Unfortunately, there’s no picture, so you’ll just have to make it yourself!

How well do you know Senator McCain?

Written by Lotus on Tuesday, 18 of March , 2008 at 10:14 pm

The New Yorker has a humorous (if slanted) quiz about the man one reporter called “Senator Hothead.”  Questions include:

Who said that McCain “will make Cheney look like Gandhi”?

(a) Pat Buchanan.

(b) Sylvester Stallone.

(c) Senator Thad Cochran.

Two of these statements refer to Bush. Which refers to McCain?

(a) At thirteen, he yelled “Fuck this” when he played golf poorly, prompting his mother to make him go sit in the car.

(b) As a toddler, if he didn’t get his way he’d hold his breath until he fainted.

(c) When he was a boy, he liked to blow up frogs with firecrackers.

LOTUS watches SCOTUS

Written by Lotus on Monday, 17 of March , 2008 at 6:40 pm

On Tuesday one of the most important cases in my lifetime will be on the docket for the Supreme Court.  LOTUS is lucky enough to live in Virginia, but the case on whether Washington D.C.’s ban on firearms is constitutional is important to all citizens.  From the Associated Press:

The nine justices have said almost nothing about gun rights, and their predecessors have likewise given no definitive answer to whether the Constitution protects an individual’s right to own guns or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia.

The case that will be argued Tuesday is among the most closely watched of the term, drawing 68 briefs from outside groups. Most of those support an individual’s right to own a gun.

“This may be one of the only cases in our lifetime when the Supreme Court is going to interpret an important provision of our Constitution unencumbered by precedent,” said Georgetown University law professor Randy Barnett.

By the way, LOTUS is a lifetime member of the NRA and you should be, too.

UPDATE: Justices listened to 98 minutes of debate.  Will freedom prevail in the District of Columbia?

Oh no, what will her parents think?!?!?!

Written by Lotus on Saturday, 15 of March , 2008 at 12:05 am

Eliot Spitzer’s (among others’) whore is fielding offers from magazines that specialize in nekkid women and open legs.  The latest offer is for $1 million from Larry Flynt’s Hustler.  I’m confused, isn’t it usually struggling singer, Hustler, and then prostitute?

By the way, check out Spinner’s list of top 20 songs about prostitutes.  Unfortunately, there is one HUGE omission.
